Story 5: The Supporter Behind the Spelling Bee

教室裡靜得只聽見心跳聲。拼字比賽的決賽到了最後一輪，只有小婷和小傑還站在講台上。
小婷念出那個長得嚇人的單字，一個字母一個字母拼出來，聲音雖小卻穩。全場安靜幾秒後，裁判舉起手：「正確！」
全班爆出掌聲，小婷紅著臉站在台上，看起來又驚又喜。老師把獎狀遞給她：「這是你努力的成果，恭喜！」
坐在最後一排的小傑也拍手，但心裡有點空落落。他在這次比賽中花了很多時間幫小婷練習，幫她設計單字卡片，一起模擬考試。
他知道自己拼字不如她，但他是真的想幫她贏。只是現在看著她一個人站在聚光燈下，他忍不住問自己：「我真的甘願嗎？」
這時，小婷忽然走下台，走到他面前說：「我可以把這張獎狀借你一會嗎？」
小傑愣住：「借我幹嘛？」
「因為你有一半功勞。」小婷笑了笑，「如果沒有你每天陪我練，我根本不敢上台。」
小傑聽完，忍不住笑出聲，舉起手掌和她擊掌：「我們贏得很漂亮！」

The classroom was so quiet, you could hear hearts beating. It was the final round of the spelling bee. Only Xiaoting and Xiaojie remained on stage.
Xiaoting spoke the monstrous-looking word slowly, spelling each letter carefully. Her voice was soft but steady. After a few seconds, the judge raised a hand: “Correct!”
The room erupted in applause. Xiaoting stood frozen on stage, her cheeks flushed, looking both stunned and happy. The teacher handed her the certificate: “This is the fruit of your hard work. Congratulations!”
Xiaojie, sitting in the back row, clapped too—but inside, he felt a bit hollow. He’d spent hours helping Xiaoting prepare, making flashcards and drilling practice rounds with her.
He knew he wasn’t as good at spelling, but he genuinely wanted her to win. Still, watching her standing alone in the spotlight, a small voice inside asked, “Am I truly okay with this?”
Then Xiaoting suddenly stepped off the stage and walked straight to him. “Can I borrow your hand for a second?”
Xiaojie blinked. “Why?”
“Because you deserve half the credit,” she smiled. “If you hadn’t helped me every day, I wouldn’t have had the courage to compete.”
Xiaojie laughed and raised his hand for a high five. “We nailed it—together!”
