Story 4: The Applause Wasn’t for Me

舞台燈亮起，音樂聲響起，小柔坐在側幕後面，雙手緊握著裙擺。她是這次話劇的副主角，已經練了兩個月。
但就在一週前，主角小晴生病了，老師讓小柔頂替三天的主角排練。她曾經以為，這是自己的機會。
可是，小晴康復得比預期快，今天的正式演出，她依然回來站上了主角的位置。小柔退回原位，嘴角笑著，心卻有點空。
劇終時，全場掌聲雷動。小晴鞠躬時眼中閃著光，而小柔在幕後輕輕拍手。那一刻，她心裡一閃念：「要是那掌聲是給我就好了……」
但就在下一幕，老師走到後台，對著所有劇組說：「今天的成功，是大家一起的功勞。尤其是小柔，三天內把主角台詞背熟，還幫小晴練習動作，是她讓舞台這麼穩！」
所有人轉向她鼓掌，小晴也跑來抱住她：「我那幾天真的很怕演不好，是妳給我信心。」
小柔鼻子一酸，輕輕笑了：「我們一起讓故事活起來了，不是嗎？」

The stage lights came on. Music swelled. Xiaorou sat behind the curtain, gripping the hem of her costume. She was the play’s supporting actress and had been rehearsing for two months.
Just a week ago, the lead actress, Xiaoqing, got sick. The teacher asked Xiaorou to rehearse the lead role for three days. For a moment, Xiaorou thought—maybe this was her big chance.
But Xiaoqing recovered faster than expected. For tonight’s official performance, she returned to the spotlight. Xiaorou stepped back to her original role, smiling on the outside, but feeling a little hollow inside.
At the end of the play, thunderous applause filled the hall. Xiaoqing bowed with shining eyes, while Xiaorou clapped softly from backstage. A tiny voice in her heart whispered, “If only that applause were for me…”
Just then, the teacher walked backstage and addressed the whole crew. “Tonight’s success was a team effort. Especially Xiaorou—she memorized the lead’s lines in three days, helped Xiaoqing rehearse movements, and made the stage feel steady.”
Everyone turned and clapped for her. Xiaoqing ran over and hugged her. “I was so scared I couldn’t perform. You gave me confidence.”
Xiaorou’s nose tingled, her eyes damp. She smiled and said, “We brought the story to life—together, didn’t we?”
