Now or Later? – How Hsiao-Yun Broke Her Habit
Hsiao-Yun looked like the perfect student—neatly dressed, twin ponytails tied with pink ribbons, and her desk plastered with colorful sticky notes and cartoon stickers. Her room radiated sweetness and charm.
But she had a well-known flaw—she was a champion procrastinator. Homework, projects, piano practice, even packing her schoolbag—every task was met with a cheerful,
“Just a minute!”
After school, Mom would gently remind her, “Finish your homework first, then relax.”
Hsiao-Yun would grin and give an “OK” sign: “Right away!” But she’d always end up flopping on the couch, phone in hand.
She’d watch funny short videos until she laughed out loud, then play a puzzle game—time slipped by, one hour, then two.
“Oh no! Homework!” she’d remember suddenly. She’d put down her phone, but right then, Mom would call her for dinner.
“I’ll do it after dinner... I’m fast anyway,” she thought while shoveling rice into her mouth.
But after dinner, the TV came on, and she couldn’t resist watching too. Before she knew it, bedtime had arrived—and nothing had been done.
Mom would frown and warn her, “The more you delay, the heavier your load becomes—like carrying a rock uphill.”
But Hsiao-Yun would wave it off, “I do my work—just... a little late.”
One night, she tossed and turned in bed, haunted by three undone tasks—math homework, a science report, and a reading log she hadn’t even decorated yet.
She sat up suddenly, pulled out her backpack, and opened her workbook. She managed two lines before her eyelids drooped—soon, she was asleep on the desk.
The next morning, her teacher frowned during roll call. “Hsiao-Yun, where’s your homework—again?”
Blushing, she mumbled, “I… forgot…”
Back home, Mom noticed her gloomy face and asked, “Rough day?”
Hsiao-Yun finally burst out, eyes misty, “I didn’t want to fail—I just kept putting it off until it was too late. I really hate this version of me…”
Mom hugged her and pointed to the quote on the wall:
“With one moment of motivation, anything can be done; with one moment of laziness, nothing can begin.”
She said, “Just begin with the first minute—it’s like turning on a switch. Everything will follow.”
From that day, Hsiao-Yun practiced the “five-minute rule”—whenever she wanted to delay, she’d force herself to do just five minutes. Most times, she couldn’t stop.
Her old “just a minute” slowly transformed into “I’ll do it now!”
