「Ordinary beings have many karmic habits and make frequent missteps in speech and behavior. The way to rectify this is to observe the precepts. By observing one precept, we overcome one karmic habit; by overcoming one karmic habit, we purge one affliction, and with the purging of all afflictions, the Way will manifest.」

Story 4: I Chant Fast—I Won’t Wait for Anyone!

Every week, the family gathered in their home shrine for evening chanting.

Incense, flowers, and offering water were placed on the altar. The moment the chanting book opened and the bell rang, everyone folded their palms and began to chant.

Thirteen-year-old Lin also joined the session.

But he never actually looked at the chanting book. His hands held it just for show. His mouth moved, his voice followed, but his eyes were either glued to the wall clock—or secretly scrolling his phone on his lap.

That wasn’t all—he had his own rhythm.

While others were still chanting “The Heart of Prajnaparamita Sutra…,” he was already speeding ahead to “Clearly saw that the five aggregates are empty!”

Grandma gently reminded, “Lin, slow down a bit. Everyone else hasn’t caught up yet.”

But he frowned and replied, “You’re all too slow. We’ve chanted this so many times already—how can you still not keep up?”

Reflection Questions

Is chanting about who is faster, or is it about being in harmony with others?

What might happen when we insist on doing things our own way, without considering others?

Lin chanted louder and faster, as if trying to prove he knew it best.

As a result, Grandma stumbled through two lines, his little sister couldn’t keep up, and his mom quietly closed her chanting book.

That night, the chanting session ended in silence. The atmosphere in the shrine felt off—as if the wind had stopped and the incense had lost its fragrance.

The next morning, Lin woke up to see the light still on in the shrine.

His mom was sitting there, wiping the covers of the sutra books, softly chanting alone.

Standing at the doorway, he suddenly realized—maybe he didn’t “win” last night after all.

That night, Lin left his phone in his room. He sat in the shrine with palms together, eyes focused on the chanting book.

Halfway through, he noticed his voice slowly syncing with the rest of the family. When the bell rang, they all turned the page together.

He no longer rushed ahead, but instead felt a deep peace and quiet joy he had never experienced before.

Reflection Questions

What did Lin change? Did he lose something—or did he gain something?

What does the “together” in group chanting really mean?

Reflection Quote

“Let go of pride and move in harmony with others—only then can the Dharma truly enter the heart.”
