- 1861 - 1865 U.S. Civil War
- 1861 - before Civil War, Texas cattle provided for priest, soldiers, civilian and local communities. At the start of Civil War, start providing for southern states and the Confederate army.
- 1863 Union army controlled the Mississippi River + blockaded Texas ports --> Texas ranchers could not move their cattle to sell to southern states and the Confederate army --> Texas cattles multiplied
- After Civil War, demand for beef in Northern increased
- 1867 Chisholm Trail began cattle drive
- 1874 Texas ranchers began to buy land and enclosed their ranches with barbed wire. But some land was public land
- 1883 Began cutting fences, about $20 million of fences were cut across Texas.
- 1884 Texas legislature passed a law that made fence cutting a serious crime, could be prison for as many as 5 years.
- 1874 railroads arrived at Texas
