Mechanics and Usage: Titles

Learn about how to punctuate titles:

  • Underline or italicize titles of television shows, movies, books, and CDs.
    • Example: The Muppet Show or The Muppet Show
  • Underline or italicize names of newspapers and magazines.
    • Example: The New York Times or The New York Times
  • Use quotation marks around titles of stories, articles, essays, songs, and poems.
    • Example: “White Cat Winter”
  • Each word in any title should be capitalized, except for articles (a, an, the), conjunctions (and, or), and short prepositions (of, for, to), unless they are the first or last word in the title.
    • Example: “At the Library”

Example: “The book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was his favorite book.” The title of the book is italicized.
