When the letters c and g come before the letters i or e, their sounds are soft.
- The soft c usually has an /s/ sound, as in circle and cell.
- The soft g often has a /j/ sound, as in giraffe and gel.
Words with more than one syllable often contain a final e. These final e syllables include a vowel, followed by a consonant, followed by the letter e (VCe). The final e is silent.
- When a syllable ends with a VCe pattern, the vowel sound is long. For example, escape (long a), excite (long i), include (long u), mistake (long a)
