A suffix is a word part added to the end of a base word that changes the word’s meaning. .
- The suffix -ment means “the act or process of” or “the state of.”
For example, judgment, excitement, placement, government
- The suffixes -ness, -ance, and -ence mean “the state or quality of.”
For example, greatness, entrance, sadness, fragrance, experience, importance, guidance, confencence, allowance, happiness, illness, obedience, presence
- The suffix -age means “act of, state of, or collection of.”
For example, storage (the act of storing/the state of being stored), anchorage, baggage, package, postage, beverage
