Main Idea, Details, and Linking Words in Explanatory Essays
An explanatory essay has a main idea and supporting details.
- The main idea is the most important idea, or topic, that the writer wants to explain.
- The details are the facts, definitions, examples, or other information supporting a main idea. Related facts are grouped together.
- Linking words and phrases such as also, another, as a result, yet, for example and etc. are used to make the explanatory essay easier to read. Linking words help readers understand the relationships between ideas.
