In our daily life, our six senses come into contact with external objects every moment. When we encounter objects to our liking, greed and craving immediately arise. Therefore, we need to always reflect and examine our thoughts. When an affliction arises, detect it and turn it around right way, so we can maintain this present mind in constant samadhi and wisdom.』

English
On Saturday afternoon, the basketball club met at the school court. When Hong arrived, he saw it was drizzling and the ground was slippery.
Jie said, “It’s just a little rain, let’s keep playing!”

Hong hesitated, but then thought if he didn’t play, others might call him “a coward.” A surge of defiance rose in his heart:
“I’m not scared!”

The game began. While trying to grab the ball, he slipped, scraped his knee, and lost possession.
As he winced in pain, he realized:
“I wasn’t playing for fun—I was playing to prove something.”

Sitting at the side, he remembered what his Buddhist club teacher once said:
“When facing situations, don’t let others’ words pull your mind away. When calm and wise, your choices are clear.”

He smiled at his teammates: “I’ll take a break—I don’t want my knee to get worse.”
Jie paused, then patted his shoulder: “Alright, next time we’ll play in better weather.”

Mind Practice Tip:

  1. Before doing something, ask yourself: “Am I doing this for joy and health, or just to show off?”

  2. Don’t let pride or provocation push you into unnecessary danger.
