Dual Enrollment, AP Courses, and Honors Classes,
While all three options - dual enrollment, AP courses, and honors classes - offer a more challenging academic experience than standard high school courses, the key difference lies in where the classes are taken and how college credit is earned: dual enrollment classes are taken at a college and directly count for college credit, AP classes are taken in high school and require passing a standardized exam to earn college credit, while honors classes are more advanced high school courses that usually do not grant college credit; with AP classes generally considered the most rigorous option among the three.
Key points to remember:
Dual Enrollment:
- Taught by college professors on a college campus.
- Students earn college credit directly through their course grades.
- May have a wider range of course options depending on the college's offerings.
AP Courses:
- Taught by high school teachers in a high school setting.
- Students must pass a standardized AP exam at the end of the course to earn college credit.
- Standardized curriculum across different schools.
- More challenging high school level courses taught by high school teachers.
- May not guarantee college credit, depending on the college and course.
- Curriculum varies based on the individual school district.
