Story 6: Fixing the Roof
English:
One summer storm left a big hole in Ming’s roof. When it rained, water dripped loudly into buckets, keeping everyone awake.
His father brought up planks and tools, climbing onto the roof. Ming followed to help. The roof was high, the wind blew his hair wildly, and the wooden planks wobbled beneath their feet—it was scary.
His father said, “Fixing the roof is like fixing the mind. You need to know where the cracks are and what material to use; otherwise, it will keep leaking.”
Ming hammered a nail, but he missed the spot, and the plank tilted. He frowned, frustrated. His father patted his shoulder: “With practice, you’ll get better. The more methods you learn, the more problems you can solve.”
Ming looked up at the blue sky and suddenly understood—Bodhisattva practice is the same: the more knowledge you gather, the more you can help others patch their “broken roofs.”
When the roof was repaired and the rain stopped, the house felt safe again. Ming’s heart felt safe too.
Reflection Questions:
-
Have you ever failed at something because you weren’t familiar with it?
-
If, like Ming, you kept practicing, wouldn’t you slowly become stronger?
