Cultivating the bodhisattva way means making the great resolve to liberate all sentient beings. Therefore, we need to study extensively to enhance our knowledge and skills, develop our integrity, and nurture our ability to deliver the Dharma. Just like a doctor needs to be familiar with every kind of prescription to treat various illnesses, we need to learn the Dharma prescriptions starting now.」

Story 5: The Bookstore’s Answer

English:
Fang walked into an old bookstore filled with the scent of wood and the soft rustle of pages. She was looking for a book on environmental science because, during class discussions about climate change, she couldn’t contribute anything.

The bookshelves were tall, like little mountains. As she searched, she thought, “If I don’t know anything, how can I help others?”
Finally, she found a book called The Green Future. Opening the chapter on energy, she learned about solar, wind, and even bioenergy. Her eyes lit up, and she began taking notes eagerly.

A few days later, when the class discussed environmental projects again, Fang shared what she had learned. Her classmates were surprised and gathered around to ask for details. She wasn’t an expert, but she could offer some ideas that inspired everyone.

Fang smiled. She realized: studying as a Bodhisattva is like exploring a bookstore—not to show off knowledge, but to provide the right “answers” when others need them.

Reflection Questions:

  • Have you ever felt left out because you didn’t understand something? How did you feel?

  • If you took the initiative to learn, would you feel more confident in the next discussion?
