Cultivating the bodhisattva way means making the great resolve to liberate all sentient beings. Therefore, we need to study extensively to enhance our knowledge and skills, develop our integrity, and nurture our ability to deliver the Dharma. Just like a doctor needs to be familiar with every kind of prescription to treat various illnesses, we need to learn the Dharma prescriptions starting now.」

Story 4: The Band’s Ensemble

English:
In the school auditorium, the stage lights glowed on the instruments—piano, drums, saxophone, and guitar. Jack held his violin but felt nervous. He only wanted to play his favorite tune, not caring much about the rest.
During rehearsal, he rushed ahead, playing a fast passage. The whole band fell apart: the drummer couldn’t keep up, the piano got drowned out, and the conductor finally had to stop.

The teacher said, “Even the most talented player, if they ignore the group, will throw everything into chaos.”
Jack’s cheeks grew warm. He realized: Bodhisattvas study widely to understand others’ needs—just like in a band, every instrument matters.

That night at home, he listened to recordings of different instruments online, practicing how to blend his violin with them. At the next rehearsal, he slowed down, carefully following the drumbeats and piano rhythm. Slowly, the music became smooth, filling the stage with harmony.

Reflection Questions:

  • Have you ever insisted on “doing things your way”? Did it help or make things harder for others?

  • If life were a band, would you be a musician who listens to others’ “sounds”?
