The ancients said: “Action is like a mountain; vow, an ocean.” Actions and vows are two wings of a bird. Everyday, after affirming our vows with prostration, we should take steps to fulfill them in our daily life—for vows guide actions; actions fulfill our vows.

— Words of Wisdom from Grand Master Wei Chueh

The Boy and the Lessons of the Mountain and the Sea

Chapter 1: The Beginning · The Promise of the Mountain and the Sea

There was a young boy who often complained to his teacher:

“Master, I make a vow every day to become a better person, and I even bow before the Buddha. But why is it that once I’m at school, I still can’t help quarreling with classmates, being lazy, and losing focus?”

The teacher smiled and led him to the foot of a mountain.

“Look at this mountain. It has stood here for hundreds of years, unmoved by wind or rain. Our actions in practice must be as steady as this mountain. Each day we must keep working, without giving up just because of small setbacks.”

Then the teacher brought the boy to the seaside.

“Look at the sea—vast and boundless, able to hold all rivers. This is like a vow. It must be wide and great, not only wishing good for yourself, but also for others. Your vow must be as vast as the sea.”

The boy’s eyes lit up: “So does that mean all I need is a vow as vast as the sea?”

The teacher shook his head:

“Having only a vow without action is like a bird with just one wing—it cannot fly. Having only action without a vow is like a bird flying aimlessly, with no direction. Remember this: your vow is the compass, your actions are the steps. After making a vow each day, you must carry it out in daily life—that is true practice.”

The boy looked at the mountain, then at the sea, and understood in his heart:

“I understand! My vow must be as vast as the sea, and my actions as steady as the mountain. That way, I can fulfill my vow step by step!”

Chapter 2: The Test · The Storms at School

The next day, he immediately faced a challenge at school.

His desk mate mocked his poor math skills. His face reddened, anger rising.

Suddenly he remembered the teacher’s words: “The mountain does not move because of wind and rain.”

He took a deep breath, calmed himself, and focused on his work. After class, he asked the teacher for help and even shared the solution with his classmates.

At that moment, he felt both the vastness of the sea and the strength of the mountain within him.

Chapter 3: Friendship · Waves and the Rock

A few weeks later, his best friend lost a competition and, discouraged, refused to join any more activities.

The boy remembered “vows as vast as the sea” and vowed: “I will help my friend rise again.”

So he practiced with his friend every day and encouraged him: “Be steady like the mountain. Don’t fall just because of one failure.”

Eventually, his friend regained his confidence. The boy realized that vows and actions were not just for himself—they could also inspire others.

The Closing Insight

The teacher smiled and said: “Your heart is slowly becoming the sea; your steps are slowly turning into the mountain. This is the path of vast vows and steady actions.”
