The ancients said: “Action is like a mountain; vow, an ocean.” Actions and vows are two wings of a bird. Everyday, after affirming our vows with prostration, we should take steps to fulfill them in our daily life—for vows guide actions; actions fulfill our vows.
English Version
There was a boy who always said, “I will play the piano so well that everyone will admire me!”
But most of the time, he wasted hours on video games and barely practiced.
When his first competition came, he had only practiced a little.
Under the stage lights, his heart raced, and his fingers trembled.
Halfway through the piece, he forgot the notes and froze. The audience whispered, and his face turned red. Embarrassed, he stumbled to the end and ran off the stage.
At home, he cried, “I made a vow to shine, but why did I end up humiliated?”
His teacher said, “You only made a vow, but you did not act. A vow is like the vast sea that gives direction. Action is like a mountain that gives strength. With only a vow and no action, you’re like a bird with only one wing—you can’t fly.”
A year later, when another competition was announced, the boy dared not be careless again.
The moment he heard the news, he made up his mind: “This time, my vow and action will go hand in hand!”
Every day after school, he sat at the piano, practicing the piece over and over. His fingers grew stiff, but he reminded himself: “My action must be steady like a mountain.”
Whenever he felt tired and wanted to quit, he remembered last year’s embarrassment, straightened his back, and kept going.
On the day of the competition, he stood on stage, took a deep breath, and let his fingers dance across the keys. The music flowed smoothly like a clear river. The audience erupted into applause.
His eyes sparkled, and he whispered to himself, “Only when my vow is vast like the sea and my action steady like the mountain can I truly achieve my dream.”
