When we thoroughly understand the principle of causality and the unconditioned, that the suffering we face in this life is the karmic consequence of our past transgressions and therefore accept adversities willingly, our karmic obstacles will dissolve. Furthermore, when we deepen our insight and know to face hardships without distress, recognizing this mind that knows is not swayed by any conditions—right then we will be free from attachments and afflictions, be in accord with the Way and attain liberation.

Nāgārjuna’s Wisdom of Cause and Effect

English Version: Mountain Lesson on Cause and Effect

Morning mist covered the green valley, and streams trickled over the stones.
Nāgārjuna led several young disciples along a mountain path. They argued about fame and merit, growing resentful toward each other.

One disciple asked anxiously, “Master, if we do good deeds but others do not appreciate them, isn’t it wasted?”

Nāgārjuna stopped and pointed to the flowing stream and drifting leaves:
“Look at the water. It flows over stones, washing the earth, yet it never keeps count of who benefits. The leaves drift with the wind, yet do not complain about their fate.”

He spoke gently:
“All things arise from causes and conditions. Whether others appreciate your deeds is not the most important. What matters is keeping the mind pure, unmoved by external circumstances. Recognize cause and effect, stay present, and your mind will naturally be calm.”

The disciples fell silent, feeling the breeze on their faces, as if their inner restlessness was gently swept away.

Nāgārjuna smiled:
“True freedom does not depend on the outside world, but on whether the mind is bright and at ease. When you understand this one thought, you will face suffering without distress, in harmony with reality.”
