法語 25 - 故事五:《地藏菩薩的願與行》

本週法語如下:

古德云:「行如山,願如海。」願與行,如鳥二翼,有願,還要有行。每天發願、禮拜以後,還要在日常生活上來用功,這就是真正在修廣大願行。所以,以願導行,用行來滿自己的願。

The ancients said: “Action is like a mountain; vow, an ocean.” Actions and vows are two wings of a bird. Everyday, after affirming our vows with prostration, we should take steps to fulfill them in our daily life—for vows guide actions; actions fulfill our vows.

地藏菩薩是媽媽非常喜歡的菩薩,菩薩的大願與實踐深深感動著媽媽。媽媽希望自己也能像地藏菩薩那樣,時時刻刻為他人著想,至少從身邊的人開始,多說好話、多體貼、多善解人意、懂得包容!



📖 地藏菩薩初發心(小說版)

在無量無邊、不可說不可說的久遠劫以前,有一位大長者的兒子,生於富饒的家庭,衣食無憂,卻心懷慈悲。他從小聽聞佛法,對世間苦難深感憂心。

有一天,他聽聞當時有一位佛號「師子奮迅具足萬行如來」,身相莊嚴,光彩照人。大長者子決定前去親眼目睹這位佛的相好。

當他站在佛前,看到師子奮迅如來全身莊嚴無比,千福莊嚴,光芒四射,如同天空最明亮的星辰。每一個微笑,每一個眼神,都透出無量智慧與慈悲。他驚嘆不已,心裡升起強烈的疑問:
「尊敬的如來,您如何修持,才能顯現如此莊嚴、具足萬行?」

師子奮迅如來微笑回應:
「你若想成就如我般的身相與功德,必須持久廣大地度脫一切受苦的眾生。」

這一句話,如雷霆般震動了大長者子的心。他想起世間無量眾生,因貪、嗔、癡而受苦,孤立無助、痛苦不堪。他心中升起無限悲憫與決心,立下宏願:

「我願在未來無量無量劫,救度所有受苦的眾生,使他們得解脫,直到究竟菩提。」

從那一刻起,他的心如山般堅定,他的願如海般廣大。他的修行不再只是為自己,而是為了所有眾生。這便是地藏菩薩初發心的大願,也是他成就無量功德的起點。


English

In countless, incalculable eons long ago, there was a young man born to a wealthy household. Although he had every material comfort, his heart was filled with compassion, and he deeply felt the suffering of beings in the world.

One day, he heard of a Buddha called Lion-Roar Fully Equipped with Ten Thousand Practices. Curious and eager, he went to see this Buddha in person.

Standing before the Tathāgata, he saw the Buddha’s magnificent form, adorned with countless blessings and radiance. Every smile, every glance, emanated infinite wisdom and compassion. Overwhelmed with awe, he asked:
“Honored Tathāgata, how did you cultivate to achieve such a glorious form and perfect conduct?”

The Lion-Roar Tathāgata smiled and replied:
“If you wish to attain a body and merits like mine, you must tirelessly liberate all beings who are suffering.”

Those words struck the young man like thunder. He thought of the countless beings trapped by greed, anger, and ignorance, all suffering without help. A boundless compassion arose in his heart, and he made a great vow:

“Through infinite eons to come, I vow to save all beings in suffering, guiding them to liberation and ultimate enlightenment.”

From that moment, his mind became as firm as a mountain, his vow as vast as the sea. His practice was no longer for himself alone—it was for all sentient beings. This was the initial great vow of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, the beginning of his boundless merits.

📖 婆羅門女與地獄的故事(小說版)

在無量不可思議的劫之前,世上有一位佛,號稱 覺華定自在王如來,其壽命長達四百千萬億阿僧祇劫。佛滅度後,有一位婆羅門女,她宿福深厚,行住坐臥皆受諸天護衛,眾人欽敬。

然而,她的母親不信佛法,輕慢三寶,雖然女兒多方勸誘,也未完全生信。母親不久便命終,墮入無間地獄。婆羅門女知母親因無信而將隨業而受苦,心中悲痛萬分。

她想:「若能供養佛塔、禮拜佛像,或許能救母脫苦。」
於是,她變賣家產,購置香華、供具,於先佛塔寺大興供養。見覺華定自在王如來的形像莊嚴端正,她心生敬仰,眼中盈滿淚水,私下默念:
「佛名大覺,具一切智,若在世時,我母死後來問佛,必定知其所在。」

正當她深深憶念母親之時,忽然空中響起慈悲之聲:
「聖女,不必憂悲。我今示汝母之去處。」

婆羅門女合掌回禮,哽咽問:「佛啊,我自失母以來,日夜思念,無處可問,今何神力,使我憂慮得解?」

聲音再次響起:「我是汝所瞻禮者,過去覺華定自在王如來,見汝憶母,倍於常情眾生之分,故來告示。」

婆羅門女因激動,舉身自撲,四肢皆傷,扶侍良久方得蘇醒。她再度恭敬請問佛:「願佛慈愍,速說我母生界,我今身心,將死不久。」

佛告訴她:「供養已畢,返舍端坐念吾名號,即當知母所生去處。」

婆羅門女依教而行,端坐念佛,一日一夜後,忽見自己身在一片滾沸的海邊。海中湧動各種鐵身惡獸,東西奔馳,百千萬罪人被惡獸爭食。又見夜叉,形態各異,多手多眼、口牙外伸、利刃如劍,驅使罪人,景象萬類,令人不敢久視。

然而,婆羅門女以念佛力,自然無懼。一位名為 無毒鬼王 出現,稽首迎接,說:「善哉菩薩,何緣來此?」

婆羅門女問道:「此是何處?」
鬼王答:「此為大鐵圍山西面第一重海,罪人業報之所。」

婆羅門女進而問:「我母剛死不久,將往何處?」
鬼王問她母親生前業行,她答道:「母親邪見,譏毀三寶。」
鬼王說:「汝母悅帝利,因汝孝心設供修福,已脫地獄,投生天道。今日其他罪人,也同得安樂。」

婆羅門女如夢初醒,心中大悟。她於佛像前立下宏願:
「願我在未來無量無量劫,所有罪苦眾生,我都要以廣設方便,使其解脫。」

文殊師利聞佛言:「當時鬼王無毒,即今財首菩薩;婆羅門女,即地藏菩薩也。」


English

In inconceivable eons long ago, there was a Buddha called Tathāgata Dharmakṣiti. His lifespan spanned four hundred trillion inconceivable eons.

After the Buddha’s parinirvana, there was a Brahmin woman with deep virtuous roots, highly respected, protected by heavenly beings.
Her mother, however, did not believe in the Three Jewels and spoke lightly of them. Despite her daughter’s efforts, she did not fully have faith. The mother passed away and fell into the Avīci hell.

The Brahmin woman, knowing her mother’s karma would lead to suffering, was filled with sorrow.
“If I offer to the Buddha’s stupa and worship the images, perhaps I can help my mother,” she thought.

She sold her possessions, bought incense, flowers, and offerings, and made grand offerings at the stupa of the past Buddha. Seeing the majestic image of Tathāgata Dharmakṣiti, she bowed with deep respect, tears in her eyes, silently thinking:
“O Buddha of all wisdom, if my mother passes away during your lifetime, surely you would know where she has gone.”

Suddenly, a compassionate voice sounded from the sky:
“O holy one, do not grieve. I shall show you where your mother has gone.”

The Brahmin woman folded her hands and asked, choking with emotion:
“Buddha, since I lost my mother, I have thought of her day and night. How can I know her fate?”

The voice replied:
“I am the one you worshiped, the past Tathāgata Dharmakṣiti. Seeing your concern for your mother, I reveal it to you beyond ordinary beings.”

Overwhelmed, she threw herself in awe, injuring her limbs. After being helped, she asked again:
“Please tell me, Buddha, where has my mother gone?”

The Buddha instructed her:
“You have completed your offerings. Return home and sit quietly, reciting my name. You will know your mother’s destination.”

She obeyed and meditated, reciting the Buddha’s name for a day and a night. She suddenly found herself by a boiling sea, filled with iron-bodied beasts, pursuing countless sinners. Yakṣas of various terrifying forms drove the guilty into the beasts’ mouths.

Yet, the Brahmin woman was fearless through her power of Buddha recollection. A great ghost-king named Mutoxic appeared, bowing:
“Well done, Bodhisattva. Why are you here?”

She asked: “Where is this place?”
He replied: “This is the first ocean west of the Great Iron-Bound Mountain, where beings suffer according to karma.”

She asked about her mother. After inquiring about her mother’s deeds, he said:
“Your mother, Devītri, through your filial offerings and merit, has been liberated from hell and reborn in the heavens. Today, other sinners also find peace.”

The Brahmin woman awoke as if from a dream. She made a great vow before the Buddha’s image:
“Through infinite eons to come, may I help all beings in suffering, providing skillful means to liberate them.”

The Buddha told Mañjuśrī:
“The ghost-king Mutoxic was the Bodhisattva of Wealth, and the Brahmin woman is Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva.”

📖 小國國王的誓願(小說版)

在無量無邊、不可說的久遠劫以前,有兩個鄰國的小國國王,他們既是國君,也是好友。

兩國的百姓雖然生活在富庶的土地上,卻因無知與貪欲,多造惡業,不修善行。看到人民受苦,兩位國王心裡都十分憂慮。

一天,他們坐在宮殿的高台上,眺望兩國的田野與村莊,微風拂過,帶來遠方孩童嬉笑與悲苦的哭聲。他們對望一眼,心中有了決定。

「我們不能坐視不管。」一位國王說,「既然身為國王,就應該想辦法救濟百姓。」

「對,我們要廣設方便,幫助他們脫離苦難。」另一位國王回答。

於是,他們各自立下誓願:

  • 一位國王說:
    「我願先成佛道,等我成佛後,再度化所有罪苦的眾生。」

  • 另一位國王說:
    「我願先度這些罪苦眾生,使他們得安樂、成就菩提,然後我自己才成佛。」

多年之後,發願先成佛道的國王,果然如願,成為了一切智成就如來,在無量阿僧祇劫之前,已證佛道。
而發願先度眾生的國王,則歷經無量劫,始終行菩薩道,救拔罪苦眾生,他正是地藏王菩薩,直到今日仍未成佛,因為他的願——
「地獄未空,誓不成佛;眾生度盡,方證菩提」——仍在持續實踐中。

站在高台上,兩位國王望著百姓,心中明白:願不只是心中想,還要化為行動;行不只是忙碌,更要承載慈悲與智慧。


English

In countless, incalculable eons long ago, two young kings ruled neighboring small kingdoms. They were not only rulers but also close friends.

Although their lands were prosperous, the people often committed evil deeds out of ignorance and greed, neglecting virtuous practices. Seeing their subjects suffer, both kings felt deep concern.

One day, sitting atop the palace terrace, overlooking fields and villages, the breeze carrying both children’s laughter and cries of suffering, they exchanged a glance, silently agreeing on a decision.

“We cannot just sit by,” said one king. “As rulers, we must find a way to help our people.”

“Yes, we must create ways to relieve their suffering,” replied the other.

They each made a vow:

  • One king said,
    “I vow to attain Buddhahood first, and then save all beings who suffer.”

  • The other said,
    “I vow to save these suffering beings first, ensuring their peace and enlightenment, and only then will I become a Buddha myself.”

Years passed. The king who vowed to become a Buddha first eventually did so, becoming Tathāgata All-Knowing, achieving Buddhahood before countless, incalculable eons had passed.

The king who vowed to save all beings first, however, traversed countless eons, tirelessly following the Bodhisattva path, liberating beings from suffering. This king became Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, who has yet to attain Buddhahood, for his vow—
“Until hells are empty, I shall not attain Buddhahood; only when all beings are liberated will I achieve enlightenment”—continues to this day.

Standing atop the terrace, both kings gazed upon their people, understanding that vows must be enacted, and actions must carry both compassion and wisdom.

光目女救母的故事 / Kōmoku Saves Her Mother

釋迦牟尼佛曾說:在過去的歲月裡,有一位女子名叫 光目。在母親的祭日時,她虔心設食供養一位已證道的阿羅漢,並恭敬地請求羅漢觀察母親往生後的去處。

羅漢入定後,看到光目女的母親正受苦於惡道,便問她:「你母親生前究竟做過什麼事,為何現在在此受苦?」

光目女低下頭,淚水滑落,聲音哽咽:「我的母親生前最喜愛吃魚子,或炒或煮,殺生千萬,還不信因果,譏毀聖賢人。尊者,我該如何幫她解脫苦難?」

羅漢慈悲地教導她:「若你至誠懇切,念佛與畫像,生者與亡者都將因此受益。」

光目女遵教如法,每日恭敬供養佛像,悲泣瞻禮。某個夜裡,她夢見佛陀現身,溫聲告訴她:「妳的母親不久將轉生到你家,從降生起便能言語。」

不久後,光目家的婢女生下一名男嬰,三天便能開口說話,直言不諱地告訴光目女:「生死因果,果報自受。我是你的母親,死後墮入地獄受苦。幸虧妳念佛、供養畫像,我才能轉生為婢子,但我的惡業尚未盡,十三歲時將再次夭折,入惡道受苦,請妳一定要想辦法救我。」

光目女聞言,心如刀割,淚水盈眶,悲痛萬分。她問道:「母親,你可知自己為何受無量苦難?」

男嬰回答:「因殺生與譭謗二業,故受果報。」

光目女心中悲痛交加,但很快下定決心,立下宏願:
「願我前往十方世界的地獄與惡道,救拔所有受苦眾生;直到所有惡道眾生皆成佛,我才願成佛;但願母親永離惡道,不再受苦。」

願一發下,便聽佛陀的音聲讚歎她的孝心與大願,說:「你的母親將因你的功德,在這一生後轉生為修行人,活到百歲,再轉生至無憂國,壽命無量,最終成佛,度化眾生。」


English

The Buddha Shakyamuni said: Long ago, there was a woman named Kōmoku. On the day of her mother’s memorial, she sincerely prepared offerings for an enlightened Arhat and humbly requested him to observe her mother’s fate after death.

The Arhat entered deep meditation and saw that Kōmoku’s mother was suffering in the hell realms. He asked, “What had your mother done in her lifetime to deserve such suffering?”

Kōmoku bowed her head, tears streaming down her face, her voice trembling:
"My mother loved fish roe, fried or boiled, and caused countless killings. She did not believe in cause and effect, and even slandered the wise. Honored sir, how can I relieve her suffering?"

The Arhat compassionately instructed her: "If you sincerely recite the Buddha’s name and make offerings to images, both the living and the deceased will receive benefit."

Kōmoku followed his guidance diligently, offering food and reverently paying homage to the Buddha’s images. One night, she dreamt that the Buddha appeared and gently told her:
"Your mother will soon be reborn in your household, and from birth she will speak."

Sure enough, shortly thereafter, a servant in Kōmoku’s household gave birth to a boy. By the third day, he could speak, revealing to Kōmoku:
"I am your mother. After death, I fell into hell. Thanks to your recitation and offerings, I have been reborn as a servant. Yet my bad karma is not exhausted; at thirteen I will die again and suffer in hell. You must find a way to save me."

Kōmoku’s heart ached, tears flowing endlessly. She asked: "Mother, do you know why you suffer so greatly?"

The boy replied: "Because of the two deeds of killing and slandering, I receive this retribution."

Despite her sorrow, Kōmoku resolved firmly and made a great vow:
"I vow to go to all hells and suffering realms in the ten directions, to liberate all suffering beings. Only when all beings in hell have attained Buddhahood will I become a Buddha; may my mother forever escape suffering."

Upon making this vow, she heard the Buddha’s voice praising her filial devotion and great aspiration:
"Because of your merit, your mother will become a practitioner in her next life, live a hundred years, and then be reborn in the Land of No Worries, with a lifespan beyond measure, ultimately attaining Buddhahood and liberating all beings."
