Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest --

「Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.」

The Mountain Road That Wifi Forgot: The Untold Story of the Cherohala Skyway

You might notice something strange as we start to drive up this road. Your signal bars are going to drop, your social media feeds will freeze, and for the next 43 miles, you won't be able to text, stream, or look up a single meme.

Before you panic, this isn't a glitch. It’s part of the magic of this specific road. You are about to drive on one of the most unique, difficult-to-build, and beautiful places in the entire United States. They call it the Cherohala Skyway, and it has a story that took over three decades to write.

Part 1: The "Unbuildable" Mountains

To understand why this road is special, you have to look at the name. It combines two different wildernesses: the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina and the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee.

"They designed a grid of straight streets."

"But they also added something special."

"They created diagonal avenues connecting the center of the city to other important places."

"So from the center circle (Monument Circle), several important roads spread outward like spokes on a bicycle wheel."

Hocking Hills State Park -- Ash Cave

3.31.2026

Ash Cave

“Welcome to Ash Cave, the largest recess cave in Hocking Hills. It’s over 700 feet wide and 90 feet high, and the first thing you notice is the immense rock ceiling.”

But this wasn’t just a cool rock formation — it was home to people long before Hocking Hills became a park.

1️⃣ Native American History

  • Long before settlers arrived, Native Americans used Ash Cave as a shelter.

  • They built small fires here, prepared food, and even held gatherings.

  • Evidence like charred wood, tools, and stone fragments suggests that people came here hundreds of years ago.

"Imagine walking into this cave 500 years ago. You’d see smoke, hear stories, and feel safe under this massive rock roof."

It’s fascinating to think about because, in 1781, there wasn't really a concept of "teenagers" as we know them today. Once you hit 14 or 15, you were essentially treated like a young adult with serious responsibilities.

If you were the kids living in Greensboro in 1781, your lives would have looked very different depending on your age:

For a 14-year-old:

At 14, a boy was often considered old enough to contribute directly to the war effort, even if he wasn't officially a soldier yet.

  • The "Music" of War: Many 14-year-olds served as Drummer Boys or Fifes. This wasn't just for entertainment; the drum was the "radio" of the battlefield. Because it was so loud, the drum beats told the soldiers when to march, when to fire, and when to retreat.

  • Couriers and Spies: Teens this age were often used as messengers because they were fast, knew the local woods, and looked less "suspicious" to British patrols than an adult man would.

  • Camp Followers: If his father was in the militia, a 14-year-old might stay with the army as a "camp follower," helping to forage for food, look after horses, or clean equipment.

For an 18-year-old:

Major General Nathanael Greene VS British Commander Lord Charles Cornwallis

Sixteen-year-old Maya stood outside the old courthouse in downtown Greensboro, the autumn wind tugging at her hoodie. The town square was a buzz of activity with coffee shops and a small farmer's market, but today, she was here for the school history project. She needed to know how this city got its name, and a local historical society tour was her only lead.

The guide, a lively older woman named Mrs. Henderson, gathered their small group. "Well now, you might think you're standing in a city named after a color or perhaps some green fields. But Greensboro, and the entire county it rests in, holds a story stained with powder smoke and incredible bravery. And it all begins with a name that was, at first, very unpopular with his own family: Nathanael Greene."

Mrs. Henderson pulled out a large, weathered map of the Carolinas from the 1780s. Maya leaned in.

"This map shows you the chessboard," she began. "In 1781, this region was a battleground. Nathanael Greene wasn't a professional soldier. He was a smart man, a merchant from Rhode Island, from a devout Quaker family who completely disowned him for joining the army. They called him the 'Fighting Quaker' in whispers.

Quakers VS Quaker Oats

Quaker Oats is a brand name, while the Quakers are a group of people with a very specific set of beliefs. It’s a bit like if a tech company named itself "The Monks"—it doesn't mean the company is run by a monastery; they just want you to think their products are simple and peaceful.

Here is the breakdown of the "Identity Theft" of the 1800s:

1. The Brand (Quaker Oats)

Back in 1877, the owners of the oat mill (Henry Seymour and William Heston) were looking for a name that stood for quality. They didn't want something flashy or aggressive. They wanted a symbol that screamed "Honest, Pure, and Trustworthy." * They chose the name "Quaker" because, at the time, everyone knew that real Quakers were famous for being incredibly fair in business and never lying.

  • The "Quaker Man" on the box: He isn't a specific person from history. He’s basically a mascot wearing the "vintage" 1700s outfit that Quakers used to wear.

2. The People (The Religious Society of Friends)

Hanging Rock State Park 的 Stone Bathhouse .

2025/8/16,我們進行了 Pride Hike #2 —— Hanging Rock State Park 的 Moore's Wall Loop。

*     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *

Hanging Rock State Park

  • 興建單位:由 Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC,平民保育團) 與 Works Progress Administration(WPA,公共工程促進署) 建造。

Homeschool . Changes in Texas

 ~ 10/29/2021 ~

Life in Texas changed in the first half of the 1900s. Cities grew in a process called urbanization. The oil and gas industry developed and expanded. The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl created great hardship for many Texans. World War II (1939-1945) brought many opportunities during a difficult time for Texans and Americans.

  • Urbanization
    • <10% Texans lived in the cities in 1900 ---> almost 2/3 lived in the cities in 1950.
    • Port cities grew such as Galveston and Corpus Christi
    • Cities grew due to development of railroad, such as Childress, Amarillo, and Dalhart.

  • Oil & Gas Industry
    • Spindletop started the oil boom.
    • Refineries and oil companies were built in Houston, Beaumont, and Port Arthur
    • In 1923, a new oil field was discovered in the Permian Basin of west Texas. Texas used the profits to create the Permanent University Fund to pay for colleges across Texas, including the University of Texas and Texas A&M University.
    • refinery oil 'gasoline' allowed people to travel longer distances, made oil-based products, Asphalt 柏油/瀝青,石油精煉過程中的產物(視頻:What's In Asphalt?). Natural gas was used to create electricity

Homeschool . Texas Americans Today

 ~ 10/27/2021 ~

Why 2012 is in the 21st Century

We live in the 21st Century, that is, the 2000s. Similarly when we say "20th Century," we are referring to the 1900s. All this because, according to the calendar we use, the 1st Century included the years 1-100 (there was no year zero), and the 2nd Century, the years 101-200. Similarly, when we say 2nd Century B.C.E. we are referring to the years 200-101 B.C.E. Within our calendar, we also have a tendency to find portentous meaning in the millennial years, that is, in the years 1000 and more recently, 2000.

Civil Rights — the rights of a citizens including the right to vote and protection under the law

Thirteenth Amendment banned slavery

Fourteenth Amendment made all African Americans citizens

1869  — Fifteenth Amendment. It gave African American men the right to vote, but not women

1920 - Nineteenth Amendment was passed to give women the right to vote

Jim Crow Laws — enforced segregation in the South

1963 > 200,000 people protest in Washington D.C.

1964 Civil Rights Act was passed

1965 Voting Rights Act was passed. The act made it against the law to have a voting tax.
